What is SEPA?

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a European payments area set up by the European Payments Council (EPC) that lets you make euro credit transfers and direct debits across more than 30 countries, under the same conditions and with the same security as a domestic payment.

It relies on two main instruments: the SEPA credit transfer (SCT) and the SEPA direct debit (SDD), both standardized in the ISO 20022 XML format — pain.001 and pain.008 respectively. SEPA has gradually replaced the old country-specific transfer and direct debit systems.
